The Greene County varsity basketball teams lost their games in the inaugural Greene County Winter Classic basketball tournament Dec. 19.
The girls team played the Indians of Pocahontas Area and lost 54-11. They were once again without lead scorer Brianna Habben, who sprained her ankle earlier in the week and missed the Tuesday game against West Marshall as well.
The good news of the game is that the Rams shot free throws at 100 percent. However, Makala Kafer was the only Ram to make it to the line. She took one shot and made it. So, one of Kafer’s game-leading three points came from the charity line.
The Rams were down 39-3 at halftime and the second half was played with a continuous clock. Eliza Carlson, Kamryn Sanders, Emma Hoyle and Ashlynn Hinners scored two points each. It was the first varsity points for Carlson, Sanders and Hinners.
The Rams continue to struggle with ball handling, committing 42 turnovers in the game. Their season best is 30.
The girls are 2-3 on the season. Pocahontas is 4-2.
The boys have yet to play with their entire starting line-up. Sophomore Jesse Miller played his first game of the season due to illness, but the Rams were again without Jackson Morton. Morton played his first game Tuesday against West Marshall.
The boys lost to Grinnell 53-38. The two teams played even-up ball most of the game, with only one point separating the teams after one quarter and a 23-20 score at the half. The Tigers were up by five points going into the fourth quarter and built their lead from there.
Bryce Stalder has led the Rams in scoring in every game this season and he did against Grinnell, to, scoring 13 points. Richard Daugherty scoffed nine points. Miller led the team in rebounding, with five offensive boards and five defensive boards. Brayden Roberts had nine rebounds and Caden Telleen had four.
The Rams made 14 of 47 shots from the flour and four of nine free throws.
The Ram boys are 0-5 on the season.
The Rams travel to Nevada for Heart of Iowa games Tuesday to close out the 2020 portion of the campaign.
